Classification: Ancient Deity of Fear, Phobias, and Nightmares
For thousands of years, humanity has remembered Phobetor as the god of fear and nightmares. His name became inseparable from terror itself, eventually giving rise to the word phobia. Ancient civilizations believed he walked among sleeping minds, taking the forms of monstrous beasts and primal horrors that lurked beyond the edge of every firelight. Though feared throughout history, those legends preserved only fragments of the truth.
Fear was never simply a force Phobetor commanded. Fear was his essence. Every instinct that warned of danger, every nightmare that prepared the mind for the unknown, and every hesitation that separated survival from death sustained his existence. Fear was never intended to be an affliction to overcome or a punishment inflicted upon humanity. It was one of creation’s oldest and most necessary forces—a gift that preserved life long before mankind understood its purpose.
For millennia, Phobetor faithfully fulfilled the role for which he had been created. While humanity cursed nightmares and dreaded the darkness, he understood both to be essential. Fear tempered arrogance, demanded caution, and forced civilizations to respect dangers they could neither predict nor comprehend. His defining act came during The Sundering, where his actions proved instrumental in the allied pantheons’ victory against the Axis of Ruin. Although the details of that ancient war have been lost to history, every surviving tradition agrees on one truth: had Phobetor fallen, the balance between the waking world and the realm of dreams would have fallen with him.
After the Sundering, Phobetor returned to the duty he had always known. Humanity continued to fear, and through that fear he endured. Kingdoms rose and fell, religions replaced one another, and civilizations advanced beyond anything the ancient world could have imagined. Yet one constant remained unchanged. As long as fear existed, so too did the being who embodied it.
That balance was shattered not by gods, demons, or war, but by humanity itself.
The creation and worldwide deployment of Fearless, the revolutionary neurological treatment developed by Michael Toscani, marked the first time in history that mankind systematically unraveled the force from which Phobetor drew his very existence. As pathological fear disappeared, nightmares diminished, and phobias faded across the world, the ancient god experienced something no immortal had ever imagined.
He began to die.
Phobetor sought Zeus and pleaded for intervention. He demanded that the scientist responsible for Fearless be stopped before fear itself vanished from the world. Zeus refused. Humanity, he declared, possessed the freedom to determine its own future, and the gods existed to preserve balance rather than dictate mankind’s destiny. His answer to Phobetor would forever alter the course of history.
Adapt…or perish.
Faced with extinction, Phobetor searched beyond the fading boundaries of the dream realm—not for fear, but for power. Across the vastness of existence he encountered something unlike anything he had ever known. It belonged neither to Olympus nor to dreams, its presence radiated from somewhere deep within the waking world with a power impossible to ignore. Phobetor could not identify what he had found, but he understood one thing with absolute certainty: it represented a path. A path beyond extinction. A path back to Earth.
Reaching that power, however, required something he couldn’t do himself in his weakened state. He needed a living soul capable of reaching what he couldn’t. Searching humanity, Phobetor sought neither heroes nor saints, but a fractured mind—someone whose grief, trauma, and despair had left subtle openings through which his influence could pass unnoticed. He found Logan Fisher. Night after night, Phobetor entered Logan’s dreams, forcing him to relive the horrors of war, the weight of failure, and the guilt that had consumed him for years.
Every dream, and whispered conversation, carried him closer to where the ancient source of power waited beneath the earth. Phobetor believed that if Logan could reach it, the strength Fearless had stolen from him could be restored, allowing him to establish a presence within the human world and reclaim the dominion over fear that had sustained him since the beginning of creation.
