Requiem Estate is an isolated seventeenth-century estate hidden deep within the forests of Exeter, Rhode Island. Although historical records confirm its construction in 1693 by colonist Edmund Whitmore, the Estate has become one of New England’s most enduring mysteries. Reports of its existence have remained remarkably inconsistent for more than three centuries. Individuals have claimed to discover the Estate only for it to disappear before anyone else could verify its location, while numerous expeditions have searched the surrounding forests without finding any trace of the structure. Whether the Estate deliberately conceals itself, exists only under specific conditions, or simply resists discovery remains unknown.
Surviving colonial records indicate that Whitmore acquired the property shortly after leaving Massachusetts in the aftermath of the Salem witch trials. The original deed contains unusual handwritten annotations warning that the land should remain undisturbed. Construction records reference the use of polished black limestone from an unidentified source and document an extraordinary number of unexplained deaths during the building of the Estate. Laborers disappeared without explanation, others died under circumstances officially recorded as accidents despite witness accounts that defied reason, and several abandoned the project without ever revealing what had driven them away. Despite these incidents, construction continued until the Estate was completed.
Descriptions of Requiem Estate have remained strikingly consistent across the centuries. Witnesses describe smooth black limestone walls that absorb light rather than reflect it, stonework assembled with impossible precision, and an unnatural silence that settles over the surrounding forest long before the structure comes into view. Birds, insects, and other wildlife are notably absent from the immediate area, while those who approach the Estate frequently report an overwhelming sense of isolation accompanied by the persistent feeling that the building itself is aware of their presence.
Historical accounts further suggest that the Estate has repeatedly appeared throughout history before vanishing once again. Among the most notable incidents are the disappearance of the Langford family in 1847 after reporting an abandoned manor hidden within the Exeter woods, the Holloway murders of 1891, during which the family’s final journal repeatedly referenced “the black house beyond the trees,” and the unexplained disappearance of every member of the Rhode Island Paranormal Society during an unauthorized investigation in 1932. Despite extensive searches, no trace of the missing individuals or any satisfactory explanation for these events has ever been found.
The Estate re-entered modern history through the disappearance of Logan Fisher, who arrived at the property after months of recurring nightmares. His journey culminated in the discovery of the Nyxgate Obelisk, an ancient monolith concealed deep beneath Requiem Estate. Logan’s contact with the Obelisk resulted in his transformation into the being later known as Malfadar, confirming that the Estate concealed far more than an abandoned colonial residence.
Despite centuries of sightings, disappearances, and investigations, Requiem Estate continues to resist explanation. Why Requiem Estate was built, and what purpose it ultimately serves, has yet to be revealed.
